Bengkung - belly binding

What is belly binding ?

Belly binding is an ancient practice found in many cultures around the world, each offering its unique approach to postpartum care. From the Malaysian Bengkung technique to the Mexican Faja, the Japanese Sarashi, and many more, women have long used these methods to support their bodies after childbirth. These practices focus on helping the body heal, providing comfort, and encouraging the body to return to its pre-pregnancy state.

I offer the Bengkung belly binding service, along with guidance on how to safely bind at home to continue the practice. This traditional Malaysian method uses a long cloth wrapped around the abdomen to support the postpartum body. It’s designed to help new mothers feel secure, supported, and nurtured during their recovery.

How does it work?

The mother’s hips and belly are wrapped with a long strip of cloth. This helps restore the tone of the abdominal muscles, relieve back pain, support the perineal area, improve posture for breastfeeding, and close the body after the baby’s birth.

When to do it?

Belly binding can start from 2 days after a vaginal birth and at least 6 weeks after a C-section. The wrap should be worn for a minimum of 2 hours up to 8 hours a day during the sacred 40 days following the birth.

What are the benefits?

Physical Support:

  • Bengkung provides gentle yet firm support to the abdominal muscles and organs, such as the uterus, encouraging them to return to their pre-pregnancy positions.

  • It supports the lower back and hips, areas that often experience discomfort after childbirth.

  • Stabilises loosened ligaments.

  • Helps close the rib cage and hips back to their previous size with steady pressure.

  • Firms up the parts of the body covered by the binding that may have lost tone during pregnancy.

  • Helps women return to their pre-pregnancy size more quickly.

✧ Improves Posture:

  • The binding helps improve posture, especially as new mothers carry and breastfeed their babies, which can lead to slouching or back pain.

  • Supports the back and relieves tension in muscles and tendons throughout the torso.

  • Provides essential support to the pelvic floor, helping it recover after childbirth.

✧ Promotes Healing:

  • By gently compressing the belly, it promotes circulation, reduces swelling, and may aid in faster recovery.

  • Improves blood circulation, helping to eliminate cellulite and detoxify the body.

  • Relieves water retention.

  • Protects against inflammation of the organs by providing gentle compression.

✧ Emotional Well-being:

  • The act of wrapping the belly can provide a comforting, nurturing experience, helping mothers feel more connected to their bodies during this transitional period.

  • Offers a pleasant sensation and a feeling of being held
